Or is it sweater weather? Maybe just that little chill in the air. Whatever expression be your pleasure, it is unmistakably fall. (Or to my pleasure: autumn.) And with it comes the good cheer. [I spoke of pumpkin spice and the selling of the season previously](https://www.livingenglish.io/an-autumnal-glare/). Now one can actually enjoy it and not feel premature. So go out and *do* enjoy.

——But I speak too quickly. Unfortunately, those typhoons have yet to let up. So, on second thought, may you find comfort indoors—with [a book cafe perhaps](https://www.instagram.com/kotobanohaotoyo/).

数週間前に公開した言語ガイド、[**The Mark of the Storm*](https://www.livingenglish.io/the-mark-of-the-storm/)をどうぞ。

Perhaps a bit of reading on the storms with [my guide from a few weeks back, *The Mark of the Storm*](https://www.livingenglish.io/the-mark-of-the-storm/). I did not feel that it would be so relevant to us in late October, but here we are. At least the temperature is comfortable. It is that[ subtle sense to the air](https://www.livingenglish.io/something-subtle/).

The coming collection sets out to explore autumn proper and all that animates our most temperate of seasons. We begin our sojourn with the rambunctiousness of an American Halloween.

I shall let Mr van Gogh's skeleton get your imagination churning. My take is all explained in the latest language guide, [*Sinister and Sweet*](https://www.livingenglish.io/sinister-and-sweet/).

The holiday is (on paper at least) to the Christian something akin to Obon. It marks the start of a religious period in remembrance of the dead. November 1st and 2nd are *All Saints'* and *All Souls' Day* respectively (to Catholics, that is). *Halloween* is simply the abbreviation of its proper name, *All Hallows' Eve*.

[**Sinister and Sweet*](https://www.livingenglish.io/sinister-and-sweet/)

As an aside, a similar sort of word shift occurred with our beloved Santa Claus. The name comes to us from the Dutch *Sinterklaas*, or Saint Nicholas—the actual human who inspired the Santa myth, which has now taken over much of Christmas' meaning. (Much to Jesus' chagrin, I can imagine.) Dialect and time play with words such that how they start is never really how they end up. Now, back to the topic at hand!

In [Sinister and Sweet](https://www.livingenglish.io/sinister-and-sweet/), we shall touch upon the reality of Halloween from an American secular perspective as a hodgepodge of kitsch and debauchery—with some interesting videos and art along the way, of course.

May these words provide a modicum of joy to your day and see you safely through the rains,

—Derek
