Heat Becomes Us?
The world is unusually hot at present. First Europe, then much of the United States, have found themselves prisoners to prolonged heatwaves and oppressive heat domes. This is made worse by climate change, of course, but also other bits of weather phenomenon such as El Niño. A sadness, yes; but also a source of exploration. Thus, our seed of thought!

A VISUAL FRAMEWORK
A perfect artistic pairing of late is a pointillist piece from Neo-Impressionist, Henri-Edmond Cross: The Evening Air (1893). It captures -- to me -- the fatigue of sun-battered bodies seeking refuge under the trees along a coastline. Very summer. Very much oppressive heat. The pointillism lends it the muddled air of humidity, similarly conjuring ideas of a mosaic, maybe from an antiquarian estate -- a Roman villa, perhaps.

MUSIC
Now that we have our visual framework, let us set the auditory mood. To think summer is to think samba. The liveliness of dance. Here is a famous piece, Mas Que Nada, rendered anew by American jazz vocalist Al Jarreau. This rendition from 1994 is a modern classic to many and immediately captures the sun and summer fun. At the beach. In a convertible. Either way it is a welcoming bit of warm weather rhythm, don't you think? Why not play this as you read on?

But then again, I have been scolded by some of you: My selection of music trends a bit old. So my promise is to be a bit closer in time. That being said, if Mr. Jarreau strikes you as a bit too vintage, then here is a popular song from the 20teens -- Summer Time Sadness -- by Ms. Del Rey. Though lovely in beat, the song emphasizes things more emotional and weighty. A fitting counterpoint to Mr. Jarreau's summer fun.
