もう少しです！ゴールデンウィークから7月下旬まで続くこの時期は、仕事といつもの週末が淡々と繰り返される、少し長く感じる季節です。気候も爽やかな初夏から、雨の日々へ。そして、ときおり台風を挟みながら、日本の夏らしいあの湿気が少しずつあたりを包み始めます。沖縄のみなさんにとっては梅雨はすでに終わりましたが、それ以外の地域では、もうしばらく続きそうです。（とはいえ、トンネルの先にはやさしい光が見えています。……いや、待ってください。あれは照りつける真夏の太陽でしょうか!? ヨーロッパを襲ったあの猛烈な暑さが、日本にもやって来ないことを願うばかりです。）

今回の表紙には、アメリカの社会派写真家ルイス・ウィックス・ハインが1920年頃に撮影した一枚を選びました。彼は当時、多くの人々が置かれていた過酷な労働環境や搾取の実態を記録し続けました。もちろん、私たちの日常とその時代を重ね合わせることはできません。しかし、この写真には、目の前の仕事に向き合い、黙々と前へ進み続ける人間の粘り強さが映し出されているように思います。

このコレクションでは、音楽や季節の風物詩から、言葉、文化、そしてロサンゼルスへの寄り道まで、初夏をめぐる8つのテーマをご用意しました。この季節が過ぎたあとも、そのうちの一つでも心に残ってくれたなら嬉しく思います。

Nearly done! That stretch from Golden Week to late July constitutes a hard slog of just work and normal weekends. The weather starts delightfully and then slides into rain -- the occasional typhoon -- and the moistness that takes hold of a proper Japanese summer. The rainy season may be done for our Okinawa friends, but for the rest of us, it continues. (With a kind light at the end of the tunnel. Or is it the blazing sun?! Let not the hellscape that has befallen Europe be our future!)

This endless work until Obon is paired with a 1920 photo from American muckraker photographer, Lewis Wickes Hine. He captured the harsh realities of work, including the abusive labor conditions many found themselves in at the time. Though not a parallel to our current everyday, it animates a shared sense of perseverance.

Inside this collection, you'll find eight different perspectives on early summer—from music and seasonal traditions to language, culture, and even a detour through Los Angeles. I hope one or two of them stay with you long after the rainy season has passed.
