The Hands of Babes

The Hands of Babes

Japanese Bridge (2018), Maritess Sulcer

It struck me as odd. When I first came to this wonderful land, Japanese friends would tell me that the red maple leaf looks like a child's hand. The five fingers splayed outward. I struggled to see it. But every season, I would be brought back to that thought. And every time, I looked at that incredible little leaf again. For it is without much protest that it is one of the most beautiful and satisfying bits of foliage around. In that case, in that sense, I came to see why many liken it to the preciousness of a baby's hand.

In the spring, it has the most luscious green unfurling. Sure, the sakura has its blooms, but the vibrant and yet robust green maple isn't far behind. Paired together, they mark spring at its full height and gorgeousness.

Though it becomes more subdued through the summer, the shape still provides something special. With one quick look you are brought to two thoughts: "How beautiful!" and "Now, that is a maple". It is linked to a quintessential Japaneseness matched only by the pine. The cherry tree at this point in the season is just another tree.

But then as the fall comes, the leaves begin to lighten and shift to the reds, yellows, and oranges. As the sakura just falls dead giving us nothing, the maple returns for an encore. Paired now with the ginkgo, it creates magic. This time, a camaraderie in both color and shape. That ginkgo fan was nothing to the eyes before—there all through the spring and summer, but uninspiring! But now, that yellow suddenly takes it to something otherworldly.

It cannot hold on for long, however. When the leaves have all parted ways and there are just those twigs and branches, the ginkgo—just like the sakura—is now naked and done; yet, the maple is nude and in pose. The knobby, gnarly path of its trunk and limbs marks the start of its winter rest with a "See you in the spring. For now, enjoy this!"

As the foliage heads into its full season, yes, let us enjoy a thought piece on its power with It's the Foliage. Explored through the art of Klimt, a poem of seasonal longing by American poet Robert Frost, and an inspiring recording by Korean pianist Yunchan Lim.

Then explore the color of the season through the plein-air of Monet. We'll take a look at his special approach to capturing the air.
