天皇誕生日 — The Emperor’s Birthday. So it is a perfect time to reflect.
The postwar constitution describes the Emperor as “the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people.” How does this statement hold for you today?
Interrogate the ideas of symbol and unity.
What does it mean for a human being to function as this? Where else — or how else — does one function as a symbol, a unity of the Japanese?
After tossing these larger concepts around, explore the following prompts:

- Does tradition stabilize — or ossify?
Try to articulate your thoughts in English. If that feels forced, speak in expansive, deliberate Japanese.

- Read Article 1 of the Japanese Constitution. Does it sound like a Japanese voice?
- Observe — on YouTube, if need be — one ceremony conducted by the Imperial Household this year.
- Sketch the chrysanthemum crest and reflect on its geometry — and how it came to symbolize the world’s oldest continuous royal lineage.
- Record a 60-second voice memo answering: What holds a nation together?
