So as not to interfere with your time in nature, this week we offer a collection of resources to engage you more mentally: music, art, and video. As the title suggests, Unfurling a New World: rapid change is afoot. From war to space exploration, to ignore these waters is to miss something of the human experience.

Recently, as explored in the lexicon on the Moonshot, NASA completed Phase 2 of its Artemis mission, bringing humans around the Moon and back for the first time in over 50 years. The goals are many-faceted, but at core lies the move toward becoming a multiplanetary species. How exciting. Or not. You decide. In any case, let us ruminate on these ideas of exploration and new frontiers. Very spring. Very unfurling. (If you do not remember that word, practice it again in the study portal here.)

Well, that should give you pause. This comes from a pioneer in AI safety, Roman Yampolskiy. He is ringing the alarm bells over humanity’s approach to artificial general intelligence: the breakneck, rather reckless pace at which we are plunging forward.

When Americans think of exploration and new frontiers, the mind often turns to the American West and the idea of Manifest Destiny — the belief that the United States was fated to stretch from “sea to shining sea.” That brings to mind expansive plains, vast mountains, conflict with Indigenous peoples, and all those cowboy-and-Indian tropes of film.
