夏には、どこか不思議な魅力があります。アメリカには夏祭りやビーチで過ごす夏があり（Dog Days）、もちろん日本にも、そんな夏があります（Ocean Stuff）。けれど、肌を刺すような暑さ、祭り、花火、そして目には見えない何かとのつながり――そうしたものが重なり合う日本の夏には、やはり独特のものがあります（The Bonds Among Us）。今季の表紙に込めた思いも、そこから生まれました（下をご覧ください）。
Summer holds that bit of magic. America may have its fairs and beach life (See Dog Days)-- and surely there is that here too (See Ocean Stuff); but the piercing heat, the festivals, the fireworks, the connection to things beyond -- all are something quite unique in Japan (see The Bonds Among Us). Herein lies the thinking behind this season's cover (See below).

ポップアートとジョン・シンガー・サージェントの出会い。もとになったのは、彼の名作 Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose です。鮮やかで、どこかけばけばしささえある黄色は、世界各地を覆ったあの息苦しい暑さを思わせます（Seeds of Thought）。その一方で、少女たちにはサージェントの筆致を生かした写実性を残し、目に見える世界と見えない世界との対照を浮かび上がらせました。少女たちは明らかに西洋の姿。その手にある提灯は、明らかに日本のもの。東洋と西洋が出会います。
Pop art meets John Singer Sargent; here, his Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. The vibrant, almost garish yellow evokes the oppressive heat seen across the globe (See the Seeds of Thought); the realism of the girls, kept in Sargent's brushwork, harnesses a contrast between worlds seen and unseen. The figures clearly Western; the lanterns clearly Japanese. East meets West.

この題名からは、母の日や春の花々を思い浮かべるかもしれません。けれど、少女たちが描かれたのは、1885年の夏、友人宅の庭でした。夏が過ぎ去ってしまう前に作品を仕上げようと、サージェントは日ごとに訪れるわずかな夕暮れの時間を追いながら、戸外で制作を続けました。
The title may conjure images of Mother's Day and the spring, but the little ladies were in fact captured in the garden of a friend over the summer of 1885 -- the artist rushing to complete the painting en plein air over a series of dusks before summer slipped away.

上の原画を見ていると、サージェントの筆から、お盆の頃の火や灯りの祭りにも通じる、あの幻想的な空気がどこか漂ってくるように感じます。私自身、亡き人を偲んで川に灯籠を流したときのことを思い出します。目の前のことに静かに没頭する少女たちの姿は、「今、ここ」に心を向けることをそっと思わせます。そして、これほど緑が生い茂っていると、この庭をすみかにする虫たちの気配まで感じられます。暗闇の中から、その甲高い鳴き声まで聞こえてきそうです（And Those Summer Bugs?）。
Sargent's hand in the original above captures something of that ethereal mood of many a fire festival over the Obon period. My own recollections are of sending lanterns afloat on a river in remembrance of a loved one. Here, the little ladies absorbed in their tasks offer a nod to the here and now. The lush greenery evokes the critters that call that garden home; the darkness almost making us hear their shrill calls. (See And Those Summer Bugs?)
